We’re big advocates of training to become a pilot for a lot of different reasons. From a growing demand for skilled pilots to the satisfaction of knowing you can fly yourself anywhere you’d like, there’s never been a better time to go to flight school.

There are several manageable steps along the way between your first discovery flight and landing your dream job as a pilot. So what can you expect? We’ve outlined some of the major things you should expect on your journey to becoming a pilot.

Know the Requirements

First and foremost, you need to make sure you know and fit the requirements to become a pilot. Depending on what type of pilot certification you’re looking to earn, you will need to complete certain medical certifications. For commercial pilot students, the minimum requirements also include:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must be able to read, speak, write, and understand English
  • Must hold at least a private pilot certificate.

Commercial pilots also need to complete at least 250 hours of flight time to earn their license and most airlines require a total of 1,500 hours to be eligible for a pilot position, which is where a lot of students get scared off. Luckily, we’ve got you covered…read on to find out how!

Private Pilot License

For all aspiring pilots, the first step on your journey is to earn your private pilot’s license. Earning your private pilot’s license includes milestones like your first solo flight (which we celebrate in a very special way) and completing the three-part FAA examination, known as a Checkride. Once you’ve earned your private pilot license you’re ready to kick things into high gear!

High Gear to Airline Pilot Career

For many students, becoming a commercial pilot can seem like long and difficult journey. At High Flight, our High Gear program makes that process a little easier. Over a span of as little at 9 months students can earn their Commercial Multi-Engine pilot certificate plus CFI certificates.

Next, aspiring commercial pilots must earn at least 1,500 hours of flight time to qualify for airline jobs. We work with our students to find flight instructor positions to help you gain the necessary hours. Best of all? After 500 hours as a flight instructor you can begin earning airline-sponsored tuition reimbursement (if qualified).

Find a Program that Works for You

Perhaps the most important thing to remember when training to become a pilot is you need to find a program that works for your needs and unique situation. No two students are alike, so why should your schooling be? Finding a program that has flexible options to fit your own pace is essential.

That’s why we offer so many different tracks! Whether you’re a high school or college student, current CCBC student, an advanced student with experience, or starting from scratch, we’ve got a plan to help make your pilot aspirations a reality.
