High Flight Academy was built on the sense of wonder that comes from leaving the earth and touching the sky, and the discipline, mentorship, and professionalism that make it possible.
The name "High Flight" is taken from a poem written by John Gillespie Magee Jr., a young American pilot who served with the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. Written at 19 years old after a test flight in a Spitfire, "High Flight" captures the singular wonder of leaving the earth and touching the sky. It remains one of the most celebrated poems in aviation history.

That sense of wonder, and the discipline, mentorship, and professionalism that make it possible, is what High Flight Academy was built on. Founded in 2017 at Pittsburgh-Butler Regional Airport, HFA has grown into one of Western Pennsylvania’s premier flight training centers, with a fleet of 16+ aircraft, 25+ instructors, and partnerships with eight colleges and universities. In 2026, HFA was named an AOPA Distinguished Flight School, an honor it first earned in 2018.
